Wines

NxNW: North by Northwest, represents wines made from inland grape growing appellations of the Columbia River Basin of Oregon and Washington. The NxNW winemakers have developed strong, creative relationships with growers and fellow winemakers in the Columbia River Appellation and throughout the northwest viticultural region, leading to this innovative project. NxNW is as unique lens for capturing the essence of terroir, the character of the people, and the quality of the wines from this great new emerging winegrowing region.

NxNW produces a number of bottlings which are available nationwide, including our single vineyard Horse Heaven Hills Riesling and Chardonnay, our Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Red Blend (available in keg only), very limited amounts of our Walla Walla Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, and a single vineyard Horse Heaven Hills dessert Riesling. Additionally, we produce a few select bottlings that are only available directly from the winery.

NxNW Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 90 Paul Gregutt — Wine Enthusiast +

Proficient technically and showing a certain amount of style, this is a focused Cabernet with tart, tangy cassis and berry fruit flavors. The barrel regimen adds a bit of toast and mocha to the finish.

NxNW Walla Walla Cabernet Sauvignon 2009 91 Paul Gregutt — Wine Enthusiast +

NxNW makes much less of its Walla Walla Cabernet than its Columbia valley bottling, though both are priced the same. This is the one to find – a deep, dark wine rife with smoke and espresso. Black cherry and cassis fruit – equally dark and quite thrilling – carries the center on through into a rich, ripe finish.

NxNW Walla Walla Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 90 Wine & Spirits +

Structured and dense, with dark notes of cedar and tobacco, this wine reveals the scent of fresh strawberries sprinkled with herbs as it takes on air. It has the structure to pair with roast beef, and the transparency to drink with a broader array of dishes, from roast chicken to mushroom pasta.

NxNW Walla Walla Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 91 Wine Spectator +

Polished, supple and appealing for its walnut-accented cherry, plum and licorice flavors, lingering easily on the generous finish. Drink now through 2016.

NxNW Walla Walla Cabernet Sauvignon 2008 90 Robert Parker +

The 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon Walla Walla Valley offers up a bit more complexity as well as aging potential. Succulent, layered, and long, it will benefit from 3-4 years of additional cellaring and offers a drinking window extending from 2014 to 2023.

NxNW Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 92 Robert Parker +

A glass-coating paque purple color, it displays aromas of cdear, baking spices, herbs, incense, black currant, and blackberry. Layered on the palate, dense, and already exhibiting some complexity, this lengthy effort…

A glass-coating opaque purple color, it displays aromas of cedar, baking spices, herbs, incense, black currant, and blackberry. Layered on the palate, dense, and already exhibiting some complexity, this lengthy effort…

NxNW Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 90 Wine Enthusiast +

A mix of Columbia Valley vineyards contributed to this Bordeaux blend, which opens aromatically with dusty red fruits, a silky mouthfeel, soft tannins and a moderate level of alcohol (14%). Immediately likeable, with mulberry/blackberry fruit, pretty chocolate and a whiff of smoke, but this could be cellared for another six or eight years.

NxNW Walla Walla Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 91 Robert Parker +

Purple/black in color with a brooding bouquet of sandalwood. Asian spices, incense, herbs, black cherry, and blackberry. On the palate it is a bit more forward than the Columbia Valley Bottling…

NxNW Walla Walla Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 91 Wine Enthusiast +

The best yet from NxNW, this deep, earthy, loamy Cabernet is sourced from Pepper Bridge and Seven Hills – top Walla Walla vineyards. Tight raspberry and huckleberry fruit is coated with dusty chocolate, coffee grounds and a lick of tobacco. Tannins are still a little chalky and unintegrated, but a little breathing time smoothes them out – Paul Gregutt

NxNW Walla Walla Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 92 Wine Spectator +

Ripe and generous, balancing its dark berry, cherry and licorice flavors against polished tannins, lingering easily on the long, expressive finish.

NxNW Walla Walla Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 91 Wine Spectator +

Focused, generous and distinctive for the way its ripe flavors slide in over fine tannins, then seem to take off and float in the air as the finish persists, echoing the black cherry, dark chocolate and meat aromas and flavors.

NxNW Columbia Valley Syrah 2009 89 Paul Gregutt — Wine Enthusiast +

Sourced from Les Collines in Walla Walla and Wallula in the Horse Heaven Hills, this engaging Syrah features firm, ripe fruit, brown spices, and a strong streak of cola. It’s drinking quite well and fully integrated, so enjoy it sooner rather than cellaring for later.

NxNW Walla Walla Syrah 2009 90 Paul Gregutt — Wine Enthusiast +

Sourced entirely from Walla Walla’s Les Collines vineyard, this lovely Syrah features pretty strawberry and cherry fruit, broadly displayed with a rich vein of chocolate. It’s forward and flavorful, drinking quite nicely already, but with the stuffing to cellar for a few more years.

NxNW Walla Walla Syrah 2009 93 Harvey Steiman — Wine Spectator +

Dark, pure and focused, delivering a gorgeous mouthful of rich, rose petal-accented blackberry, black olive and tar flavors that linger enticingly on the polished finish. Drink now through 2019.

NxNW Walla Walla Syrah 2008 90 Wine Enthusiast +

This classically styled Walla Walla Syrah is sourced from the excellent Les Collines Vineyard. Wreathed in smoke and suggestions of funky earth, the black fruits shine through and the tannins have grip and muscle. Solid and substantial.

NxNW Walla Walla Syrah 2008 93 Wine Spectator +

Supple, complex and distinctive, displaying an intriguing interplay of dark berry, black olive, stony mineral and dusky spice flavors that weave through a veil of fine tannins, lingering on an expressive finish…

NxNW Columbia Valley Syrah 2007 90 Wine Spectator +

Supple, silky and refined, with juicy plum and blackberry fruit bobbing alng atop beautifully integrated tannins, coming together seamlessly on the finish.

NxNW Walla Walla Syrah 2007 90 Wine Enthusiast +

Pure Syrah from the Les Collines vineyard, this has far more punch and specificity than the Columbia Valley offering from NxNW. Along with plum, cherry, and cassis fruit, vivid and limned with fresh acids, there are highlights of tea, seaweed, moist earth, cut tobacco, vanilla and smoke. In other words, a riot of interesting flavors, light but intriguing. – Paul Gregutt

NxNW Walla Walla Syrah 2006 90 Wine Spectator +

Ripe and spicy, with an earthy red pepper edge to the blackberry and pomegranate character. The flavors linger beautifully, echoing fruit and spice. Drink now through 2014. 222 cases made. –HS

NxNW Horse Heaven Hills Riesling 2011 Best Buy 90 Paul Gregutt — Wine Enthusiast +

Quite tart and bone dry, this sources its fruit from the Wallula Benches vineyard – a site also prominently featured in Pacific Rim’s Riesling lineup. Racy and gin-like, it emphasizes botanicals and citrus, with good penetration and length.

NxNW Horse Heaven Hills Riesling 2011 Best Value 89 Harvey Steiman — Wine Spectator +

Light and silky, displaying pretty flavors of pear and peach that linger on the dry, generous finish. Drink now through 2016.

NxNW Horse Heaven Hills Riesling 2010 BEST BUY 90 Paul Gregutt — Wine Enthusiast +

Done in a dry style, this fine effort is sourced from the Wallula Benches vineyard. It’s good juice, with a delicious mix of stone fruits, citrus zest and a hint of sweet honey.

NxNW Walla Walla Cuvée 2008 91 Wine Spectator +

Supple, ripe and appealing for the loamy earth and green olive notes, which harmonize nicely with black cherry and spice flavors, rolling through a gentle finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot.
